Re: Hallo und Hello
First of all a warm welcome to the forum. About language and/or grammar skills let me tell you a short story.
When you're a normal pupil in Germany, you have to learn the English language for minimum four years, most of us have 5 years, highschoolers 7 years. I have to confess that this lessons are not taken too serious by the students as very often they thin "So what? When will I ever use this languiage again?". I guess that's the same story with all students worldwide whcihe are forced to learn a secon language.
And that was the same with me. Unfortunately later in my life I was in urgent need of my poor English skills as I started in the job of a shipping agent- dealing with peaople from all over the world. And believe me, brother- my skills were more then poor that time.
In the very beginning of my career I met a Master on a british Ship. His name was Captain J. T. Thompson from Newcastle, I don't remember the name of the ship. I talked very shy to him, having the typical I-cannot-find-the-correct-term-problem. He was a very tall and strong guy in the late 50's/early 60's, representing everything I expected from a british Captain: Whiskers, white hair, weather-beaten face and iron blue eyes which seemed to have seen everything in the world.
I stood in fron of him, stammering, feeling uncomfortable with the grammar.
He asked me dierctly, why I'm so inhibited, so scared. I told him veraciously, that my English skills and especially my grammar is beneath contempt. He answered: "Man, talk! Just talk! Grammar is the sign of a sick mind!" And the he explained to me, that it's completely unimportand how you talk, speak or write- when the peaople are not able to understand, the'll tell you. The people WANT to understand you, and that's all, what a language is for.
So addressed to you, I say: Write in English, if you feel more comfortable, write in German, if you want to improve your skills, write a mixture if this is coming to your mind. If we can't understand you writings, we'll ask you- and if your don't understand our Pidgin-English, do the same. If you want help in German language: No problem. If you don't want "lessons": No problem, too.
I guess Closey can confirm, that we're not on one side no native English-speakers, but that we do our best to be understood. And that on the othersinde we're also no born German teachers. If assistence is wanted- we'll do, if not- that fine for us, too. If you find any speech to rough or readable in two ways: Assume that the writer tried to find some friendly words.
