Over heating ... :-( ... help!
Hello Guys and thank you all for the warm welcome and ideas on how to transport the bike to Lisbon. I have checked some prices and decided to either ride there, or forget about Lisbon for now !
I have just arrived in Munich and she did travel very well - two of us and fully loaded maintaining around 150- 160 km/hr, intention is to go to Florence tomorrow (another 650km) and take it from there, however, as we arrived in Munich (at Hotel) I have noticed she was going weaker, checked the temperature and she all over heated, no problem now as we already arrived, but I don't understand anything about engines, I am wondering if anyone could indicate a mechanic here in Munich to look at it tomorrow morning ... I have done a search, but obviously it is all in German . Or perhaps anyone can tell me that it might be OK if do regular breaks and take it easier on the road (140km/hr??) ...! Or perhaps anyone has some ideas on what should be checked up ...!
Can anyone shed some light here for us?? Staying in a Hotel in Munich till tomorrow .. if ok to continue the trip ...!
Thank you in advance
Ricardo

Re: Over heating ... :-( ... help!
How could you find out that the bike is overheated? Does it have a oil temperature meter? Up to 140° celsius are not dangerous but don't go over that.
Well, cooling is mainly done via cooling the oil through the oil cooler. So check the motor oil level at the inspection glass at the right side of the engine. It should be near (But not above) the max mark while the bike is on the main stand on flat ground. Do not check right after stopping the engine, give the oil a miminum of five minutes to drip down in the sump.
And you should better check every day when you are on such a long trip and going that speed, these engines need some oil when you demand the power.

Re: Over heating ... :-( ... help!
Hello Uwe
Thank you for the prompt reply. I have been keeping an eye on the oil level, as she is an old bike, it is fine ...! Now after about one hour the engine dropped down to a normal temperature, still around 29-30, but I turned it on and she seems that she got her power back I will take for a quick ride to test it slowly, but have asked the hotel reception to contact the Suzuki here, which it seems to not far from the hotel, to see if they can take a look tomorrow morning.
I have done a 580 Euros worth of service with Suzuki Kassel a few weeks ago and popped there day before yesterday so they could give me the OK to travel ... it was all fine, even discussed the speed, Rolf asked me not to force over 160km/hr, but if she survives tonight ... fingers crossed ... I will drop to 140km/hr max!!!
Will post tomorrow the result of it all, as soon as I get access to the net again ..
Regards

Re: Over heating ... :-( ... help!
Hi Ricardo,
as Uwe asked already: how do you define "over heating"?
in your second posting you write about normal temperature of 29-30 - how do you measure?
did you check oil level?

Re: Over heating ... :-( ... help!
Yes, sorry guys I haven't answered the question ... apologies <blush> ...! Not sure of the numbering now, but the hand on the temperature measurement device was inside the "red" mark ...! I suppose over the 140 mark them, will take another reading and confirm the numbering ..! The 28-30 is now after cooling a bit, after I last checked.

Re: Over heating ... :-( ... help!
Ok ... got all the info now. The current temperature is actually 50 degrees, not sure how I got 29-30 ... that tyres pressure ... <blush> again.
The "red" on the thermometer is from 120 to 140. It was in the middle, so on 130 when arrived here.
Now I have placed it on central stand and properly inspected the oil ... it is just above the low mark ... so, it seems it was a close call this time! She is certainly letting oil slowly ... so got the tool I need from hotel and closest petrol station address ... will buy oil and hope for the best.
Is there any particular brand of oil, or grade I should be looking for??
Cheers

Re: Over heating ... :-( ... help!
Check all 500km oil, fill up oil and enjoy your trip
Gruß
Volker

Re: Over heating ... :-( ... help!
Hi mate,
some of us (myself as well) use to travel at such speed all the time without any overheating problems.
I go at 180- 190 km/h most of the time. If it overheats at 160 km/h I reckon the carbs are on the lean side. (main jet too small or dirty due of long standing period, or filters dirty or fuel starvation because of wrong fuel line laying/not original fuel lines from Tank to cock or false floater-settings, or sucking false air)
Best thing to really check what´s wrong is riding the bike at the desired speed, pull clutch in 5th gear, press kill swich and let it roll into a parking gap . (doing so does really show the colour of your spark plug without disturbing them by idle mixture). Now let it cool down a while, take one plug out and have a look. The inner ceramic part of the plug´s point shold be at least light brown . If they look like bright white, the carbs are too lean at this driving condition.
If so: keep below the critical speed or see a specialist and tell him the problem.
Have a safe trip!
regards, Claus
